Magma Storage at Ocean Islands

چکیده

The Cape Verde archipelago is a group of ocean islands in the Central Atlantic that forms two chains trending northwest and southwest. Several are considered to be volcanically active, with frequent eruptions on Fogo. We examine mineral chemistry thermobarometry southern islands—Santiago, Fogo, Brava—together Cadamosto Seamount. Our objective explore magmatic storage system implications for volcanic associated hazards at Verde. rocks alkaline dominantly mafic, whereas island Brava Seamount unusually felsic. Clinopyroxene compositions range from 60 90 Mg# Santiago In contrast, Seamount, clinopyroxene 5 75 Mg#. Mineral zonation records fractional crystallization, recharge, aggregation crystals, magma mixing, variations thermal conditions temperatures 925 1250 °C. Magma depths Santiago, Brava, between 12 40 km, forming deep sub-Moho zones. Transient crust suggested by fluid inclusion re-equilibration pre-eruption seismicity. A global compilation suggests common feature, often rapid ascent through crust. Shallow more variable likely reflects local crustal structure, sediment supply, tectonics. Petrological constraints plumbing elsewhere vital integrate deformation models seismicity order improve understanding mitigation hazards.

Magma Flow at Mid-Ocean Ridges

Liquid water is not stable under current martian surface conditions, but the presence of small gullies on the polewardfacing slopes of midto highlatitude martian surfaces suggests that erosion by liquid water might have occurred. Costard et al. (p. 110) developed a global climate model for Mars when it had a higher obliquity (about 300,000 years ago). Their model shows that more melting of the ...

Magma storage prior to the 1912 eruption at Novarupta , Alaska

New analytical and experimental data constrain the storage and equilibration conditions of the magmas erupted in 1912 from Novarupta in the 20th century’s largest volcanic event. Phase relations at H2O+CO2 fluid saturation were determined for an andesite (58.7 wt% SiO2) and a dacite (67.7 wt%) from the compositional extremes of intermediate magmas erupted. The phase assemblages, matrix melt com...

Nonfractional Crystallization of a Terrestrial Magma Ocean

It has been suggested that evolution of a terrestrial magma ocean does not unavoidably follow a fractional crystallization scenario. Convection is able to preclude differentiation until a sharp viscosity increase occurs near some critical crystal fraction. However, this kind of crystallization and its physical and chemical consequences have not been previously studied. •Ve consider an end-membe...

PSRD: Crystallizing the Lunar Magma Ocean

central tenet of lunar science is that the Moon was surrounded by a huge ocean of magma when it formed. Originally thought to be a few hundred kilometers deep, lunar scientists now think that the entire Moon was initially molten. Numerous geochemical models have been constructed for the crystallization of the magma ocean. All the calculations use computer programs based on experimental data, bu...

Sea-level rise at tropical Pacific and Indian Ocean islands

Historical and projected sea-levels for islands in the tropical Pacific and Indian oceans are a subject of considerable interest and some controversy. The large variability (e.g. El Niño) signals and the shortness of many of the individual tide-gauge records contribute to uncertainty of historical rates of sea-level rise. Here, we determine rates of sea-level rise from tide gauges in the region...
